It was in the year 1120 AD Veera Ballalla, one of the Chole Kings who ruled the Deccan plateau lost his way in the forest. To show his respect and gratitude towards the old lady, he constructed a town it was named Benda Kalooru which meant Baked Beans.
Cholas played a major role in the history of Bangalore. Bangalore was captured by the Cholas in 1024 from the western Gangas. Later on in the year 1070, it passed on to the Chalukya-cholas. Later on in 1116 the Hoysala Empire captured Bangalore and overthrew the Cholas. It is said that Kempe Gowda I was the founder of modern Bangalore. Later in 1537, Kempe Gowda helped design this town in a new way and gave the city its present structure. Kempe Gowda nicknamed this city as "gandu bhoomi" or "Land of Heroes" and established the Nandi Temple here. It was the successors of Kempe Gowda's known as Kempe Gowda II who built four important towers which marked the boundary of Bangalore.
An important part of the history of Bangalore is the rule of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.
